Welcome! I’m Woodbury Rand (my url just screams it at you), an illustrator and comics artist. I live and work in Chicago, with a BFA from The School of the Art Institute, working at the International School of Comics. My work generally revolves around this general wellness of being, or at least attempts to. I find humor in most things, which leaks into just about everything I do. Even if our baseline living standards are bleak and dark we can always laugh at ourselves.

I’m a freelance illustrator and cartoonist, always with an eye towards the next big project. This space is my online portfolio and personal gallery, and it is also a blog about my own personal advancement of skill in art. I love making illustrations and comics, and as much as I enjoy creating I know that I can always improve. I hope that with each post, I can see my own level of skill advancing until… well, actually, I have no stopping point. I feel that most artists can always be better, faster, bigger, no matter what skill level they start at.

  1. Hey Emma! I didn’t get a chance to tell you on the last day of comics class cause I was sick but I’m sending feedback via email to anyone who supplied an address. I just wanted to say wow! Your comic is one of my favorites from the semester! You have a very distinct style and you seem to have a knowledgeable and experienced hand at making comics and illustrations. I really appreciate the complexity of your panels and the layouts of each page. The story was really interesting and the comic as a whole was such a joy to read. You have a really great way of setting mood too. Keep doing this! You really have something here!

Thanks again for sharing your comic!

  2. Gouache, you say? You really get a lot out of this simple material! That’s really great. What is it exactly that made / makes it your favorite? i also like all the ‘watery’ materials, but like real vivid colours and transparance (aquarel, ecoline, markers). Anyways: I like what you’re doing and will follow it here… Good drawing day! 🙂

    • I don’t know why it’s a favorite, I like it more than watercolor since the color pops immediately. But then again watercolor has a soft beauty to it that I like, so… who knows haha
I’m so glad you enjoy the work! What a fantastic compliment! Keep checking back, I’m posting more and more in the coming days. Let me know what you think! I can always use feedback.
      Thanks again! 😀
