Natural History Plant Gouache

I’m starting to really enjoy gouache paints, they have such rich color in the end. Watercolor works very well, don’t get me wrong, but all that layering, I don’t have the patience for it. Instead, enjoy some natural history paintings. This first one was done at the Chicago Observatory.

This next one was a collection of plans put together, some painted at the Observatory. I’m just about to start a new project with a collection of plants, one much larger than this, so it’s fun to look back on a little study like this.

The paper makes a huge difference, I can see in the scans. The heavier (300 lb) paper on top was much easier to work on, and the flimsier paper (I forget the lb) for the second warps terribly. Ah well, lesson learned!
